Aetherflood

Concentrated Aether pooled in an area due to an imbalance of (or disruption of) natural diffusion results in aetherfloods. In an aetherflooded area, any living being who breathes in the air is substantially more susceptible to becoming Akashic. While spiritualists and others with Aethereal Tolerance have a natural resistance to the effects of an Aetherflood, none are believed to be completely immune-- and any who succumb are powerless to reverse its effect. As such, aetherfloods are considered to be highly dangerous, especially in confined spaces where excess Aether cannot easily dissipate.
